A recent, and very frigid Saturday night in November I found new love for late night cafe con leche and quava pasteles in jackson Heights.
It was on a whim, really, that I decided to brave the freezing temperatures that night and trek to Queens. Initially lured to the outer-borough by an opening at Y gallery, I knew I would have to add food to the evening plans if I was going to motivate myself off my couch and out the front door. I was meeting up with a friend who happens to be from Colombia, so it seemed proper to check out his favorite place to eat colombian food. As we sat down for dinner, he admitted that this was the place that his family would visit often, even though they lived in Brooklyn. Well, good enough for me! The food was as promised, deliciously large portions of traditional Colombian fare; chuleta, beans, meat, fried sweet plantains, and this tasty pork belly-bit of fried goodness. Plain and simple, it was just good food. Next we walked down the block to Cositas Ricas bakery and cafe. The bright green and white neon sign lit up the corner; standing as a beacon of sorts. We sat on stools at the counter, and watched the waitresses steam milk, package up pastries and bread, and chat up the other customers sitting beside us. Ordering two cafe con leche's and two pasteles - which are kind of like part turnover and part empananda - filled with guava paste. tasty little things.
